How do I start a GriefShare ministry at my church?

To start a GriefShare ministry at your church, you’ll want to follow a few simple steps:

1. Learn what GriefShare is

GriefShare is a Christ-centered, video-based support group for people grieving the death of a loved one. It’s designed to be easy for churches to lead and welcoming for newcomers.

2. Get the GriefShare resources

To begin, you’ll purchase the GriefShare leader kit and participant workbooks. These materials include everything you need to run the group, including leader guidance and session structure.

3. Choose your leader(s)

Most churches start with one or two leaders who have a heart for grief ministry and are willing to provide encouragement and support in a group setting. Leaders do not have to be professional counselors.

4. Register your church and set up your group online

Create your church’s GriefShare listing and group schedule at www.griefshare.org. This allows people in your community to find your group and register.

5. Set a start date and meeting details

Pick a meeting day/time, decide where the group will meet, and plan your first group cycle (typically 13 weeks).

6. Promote your group

GriefShare provides free promotional tools like flyers, bulletin inserts, and online marketing resources. Many churches also promote through announcements, social media, and word of mouth.

7. Launch and support the group

Each session includes a video, group discussion, and personal workbook time. Leaders simply guide the group through the weekly format and offer a caring presence.
